Manatee Cancer Center, the area’s outstanding outpatient center for radiation treatment of cancer, welcomes a new, state-of-the-art cancer treatment in the form of the Siemens Artiste, a linear accelerator that uses the technology of IGRT with radiosurgery capabilities. “Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) is the biggest leap forward in the field in radiation,” Dr. Koshy explains. “This treatment has dramatically revolutionized radiation treatment delivery in cancer patients. Image Guided treatment allows more precise and accurate delivery of radiation to the targeted tumor. The radiation dose precisely conforms around the tumor allowing us to spare surrounding normal healthy tissue exposed to radiation to as little as a few millimeters. Because of this improved targeting and accuracy, higher doses can be delivered which can in certain cancers leads to better tumor control.
